Humic acids in water bodies are important precursors to halogenation by-products. Humus is very susceptible to the formation of disinfection by-product DBPs and trihalomethane carcinogens THMs during the chlorine process of water plants. Almost all aquatic natural organic matter is reported to be chlorinated during the disinfection process, with humic acid, which accounts for about half of dissolved aquatic organic matter, being the most important precursor to the production of THMs.
